A Punjabi lad from a simple middle class background made a niche in glitzy world with ‘Yaadan Teriyaan’ and ‘Maa de Dandeya’. Jassi Katyal, a name prominent in Punjabi Industry has stepped into Bollywood to show his art of making music to the whole nation. His work in Salman Khan Production’s ‘Hero’ with music maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gave him the long awaited gear in the industry. He opened up with us to share his first step into the B town.
Q- Your first expedition with B town artists
I feel so honoured to have worked with them. I just happened to be fortunate and I wish God showers such luck to all. They made me feel so homely. I never felt as if I’m new amongst them. Their guidance and faith in me kept me going. Their grounded nature and humble rectitude is what attracted me the most.
Q- As a debutant
I made my debut with Dilli waali Zaalim Girlfriend. It was a non commercial song which didn’t attain much audience attention but my work came in front of people and may be this is the reason when Kumar Rakesh forwarded my one of the songs; Dharma Productions loved it and locked it.
Q- Your struggle period
I belong to an average middle class family who aspire to get a well settled job but I wasn’t happy with this idea of living. I was in deep love with music and had to go against my family to take it up as my choice of profession. Lack of resources made me explore everything coming from everywhere related to music. I took music lessons from internet during early 2000s, went through journals and books. Slowly I started doing basic sound editing and gradually at personal level started experimenting with different tunes. But now peeping down the lane, I feel so proud of myself that I made it and today my family is proud of me.
Q- Did you find any significant difference between Pollywood and Bollywood?
For me working in Punjabi as well as Hindi music Industry both have been same. At a very tender age, I learnt the value of quality and hard work. With almighty’s blessings, I’ve always come across quality lovers. I found them to be very professional and passionate towards their work. With them, it was a whole new experience of learning.
Q- What next is Jassi Katyal up to?
(Chuckles) Most of my romantic love songs have been great hits and have been labelled for this particular genre. I want to come out this notion that Jassi Katyal can only make love songs. I’m experimenting with music right now and very soon planning to come up with a power packed song with Dr. Zeus.
Q- Your message to struggling music aspirants
I would only say that look for the area of interest whether it’s singing, composing, or anything. Just identify what your heart yearns for and work on it as early as possible. Do not let time waiver your spirit and have patience.
