Proverbs form the guiding principles of our daily lives. On dissecting the word, there are two parts to it – “pro”, which means to support something and “verb” denotes any action. Therefore, proverbs are tools which helps us in conveying a thought with an example. Nowadays, since we adopt corporate culture much faster than before, it would be interesting to analyze how proverbs fit into this sphere. This might sound like a moral science class, but let’s relate some of the proverbs to our daily office life.
1. A stitch in time saves the nine
It is never worth delaying the proceedings. Be it addressing the work in hand or mending a sour relationship with a colleague, this saying discourages us to procrastinate for the good.
2. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
Though this maxim is closely related to investments, it teaches us the importance of multi-tasking skills. It is never recommended to devote all energy towards any one activity. Rather, to be successful, it is crucial to be skilled in various categories.
3. Rome was not built in a day
Patience and perseverance pay a lot. This proverb is for that sect of people who expect to get promotions or the highest possible rating year on year without understanding the dynamics of assessment. It requires composure to scale the peak, and it can’t happen overnight.
4. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush
This adage is linked to risk and greed. At times, it is better to be satisfied with whatever job or salary is there on offer than losing it for something which is hard to obtain.
5. Make hay while the sun shines
It’s not every day that we get chances to outshine our competitors at workplace, but when we do get them, it’s advisable to make the best use of those opportunities.
6. There is no such thing as a free lunch
‘No pain, no gain’ is the message behind this proverb. There are no short cuts to success, and we need to earn our required position in the firm by putting in some rigorous efforts.
7. Birds of the same feather flock together
Similar minds form a cartel in every organization.We refer to it as grouping and predominantly doubt the lot in spreading gossips.
8. Actions speaks louder than words
Much to do with politicians, but for corporates, it is absolutely essential to perform and not just brag of capabilities. That separates a goner from a performer.
9. Too many cooks spoil the broth
Employing a large pool of resources on any vital project may often go haywire. Efficiency may go for a toss if we keep on staffing for turning around things faster.
10. Don’t judge a book by its cover
Deceit is abundant in present day corporates. It is sensible not to go by anyone’s ‘face value’ and land in trouble.
