In today’s time when eating exotic animal based dish is considered to be a status symbol, some people chose to play it differently. These vegetarian actors have chosen to lead a compassionate life by choosing to let every living organism coexist. Some actors are vegetarian by birth and some gave up on it because they fell for it.
Nature has its own balance and no species in this world can over populate the planet. Therefore the people who say “we eat animals so that they don’t outnumber us” is perhaps the biggest hogwash excuse someone can come up with.

1. Amitabh Bachchan
The first on the list is Big B himself, the “Shahenshah of Bollywood”. Mr. Bachchan gave up eating non vegetarian food quite a while ago. His secret to having a healthy and energetic life even at the of 74 years is: proper sleep, no bad vices including tea/coffee, morning walks and his love for vegetarian food. He is vegetarian by choice and for strictly non religious purposes!
Note worthily, Amitabh Bachchan has been voted “Asia’s sexiest Vegetarian Male actor” in a survey conducted by PETA thrice.
2. Shahid Kapoor
He chose to become vegetarian after reading a book named Life is fair by Brian Hines. This was gifted to him by his father. Shahid Kapoor too won the title of “Asia’s sexiest Vegetarian Actor” in 2009 and became a member of PETA thereafter. He has shot a lot of ad films with the tagline “Chicks love a Vegetarian”.
“The day I started believing in the fact that I would want not to kill animals for my taste buds that is the day everything changed for me” – He mentions in one of the interviews.
3. Jacqueline Fernandez
Next up, is Ms. Sri Lanka who is gorgeous from outside and has a compassionate soul too. Jacqueline Fernandez chose to be vegetarian for she loves animals too much. Her heart did not allow her to kill and eat what she loves. She confesses today that vegetarian diet has helped her to be healthy and fitter than ever before.
4. Anushka Sharma
The “Dil Dhadakne Do” actress Anushka Sharma has also become a vegetarian by choice. She decided to give up meat in the year 2015.
What made this army girl become vegetarian ?
Interestingly, she has given up meat for someone she loves the most. No, it is not what you and I are thinking right now. Her reason for becoming vegetarian is her pet dog. How cute is that! Apparently, her pet dog “Dude”did not like the smell of meat and this is why she chose to become a vegetarian.
5. Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan, the “Mr. Perfectionist” of Bollywood decided to become a vegetarian actor after his 50th birthday. While Aamir had been enjoying meat, fish, and eggs since his childhood, what prompted him to go the green way?
Well, after his 50th Birthday Aamir chose to give up eating non veg food because he was shown a YouTube video by his wife Kiran Rao. The video showed how a diet change can avoid 15 most common ailments and help in leading a healthy life. Surely this video inspired him too much that he gave up not only eating meat but also every single dairy product!
Rightly, this change of dietary habits happened during the time, he was to begin shooting for Dangal and now we all know the secret of his transformation as well.
Although, he has admitted to missing curd from his diet but he has not strayed even once.We hope that this Bollywood Superstar inspires millions of Indians to go the vegan way.
6. Alia Bhatt
The cute Alia Bhatt is a recent addition to the Vegetarian Actors family. Although she was not a hard core Non Vegetarian, she chose to become a pure vegetarian because of the Indian climate. Ms. Bhatt feels that the tropical climate of India aids digestion well on a vegetarian diet. Apparently, she faced challenges in her health, skin and hair which became alright after she converted into being a vegetarian person.
Interestingly, Alia’s father Mahesh Bhatt is also a vegetarian and surely the father is too happy with Alia’s decision.
7. Lisa Haydon
Lisa Haydon has won hearts in movies like Queen. Her vegetarian diet is her secret for the perfect 10 figure which she sports. Being vegetarian by birth, Liya never got the urge to change the food habits while growing up, thanks to her mother. Lisa’s mother inspired her to be compassionate towards animals and therefore as Lisa says she enjoys her bowl of salads just as much as others enjoy mutton pieces in the biryani.
8. Rekha
The torch bearer of natural beauty – Rekha has a beauty secret to reveal. Apart from practicing yoga every morning, Rekha attributes vegetarian diet as the secret for her flawless, ageless beauty. According to her, vegetarian actors/celebrities/people in general have a heightened thought process and rationality. Same is the reason she never promoted consumption of non veg food in any form.
9. R Madhavan
Manu bhaisahab has been the most devoted of all vegetarian actors. Being born in a Tam-bram family, R Madhavan is a handsome addition to the list of vegetarian actors by birth. Madhavan has made a video called “Glass Walls” which inspires people to say “No” to non vegetarian food.
He too was voted as the cutest Male Vegetarian by PETA in the year 2006. According to Madhavan, “People who witness what animals go through in the slaughter houses will automatically have mercy towards animals and will adhere to vegetarianism”.
10. Vidya Balan
The feisty lady that she is on screen, is no different off screen either. Nobody becomes a stronger person by showing power over the weak. Vidya Balan believes in this and therefore has continued to be a vegetarian all her life. Though for a brief period she included eggs in her diet but very soon she gave up on them too and became the go green brand ambassador.
Vidya feels light and healthy by having Vegetarian food. She has also been voted as the Hottest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2012 by PETA.

Going vegan is a way of life and Bollywood has taken it in its true spirit Each one of them have their own reasons for becoming vegetarians but they have become so and don’t regret it at all.
