Shivee PoddarToday Indian special forces have made surgical strikes on POK between 12:30 AM to 4:00 AM. The strikes were made to curb infiltration plans from the other side of the border. Most of the people in India think this as a befitting reply for the innocent killings in Uri.
These attacks of last night have caused heavy casualty on the terror launch pads of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Our special forces of the army have busted 7 launch pads killing 38-40 terrorists and 9 Pakistani soldiers. No Indian casualty was reported during the entire operation.
The surgical strikes has put Pakistan in a spot because neither can they retort nor can then accept the casualties to their terrorist setup publicly.
Our Special Forces have made us proud yet again. Since most of us know very little or nothing about the Indian Special Forces, here is a detailed insight about the Indian Special Forces.
Indian Special Forces
Special Forces, or special operation forces, are military units trained to perform insecure and unconventional missions. Moreover, these forces are prepared to be extraordinarily efficient in their tasks and they prove that nothing is impossible for them. In fact, the origin of Special Forces dates back to the Second World War. These forces were created to aid the allies against their war in West Asia and Africa.
We have mentioned below the details of our Indian Special Forces detailing about their divisions and core competencies.
1. Ghatak Force
Ghatak Platoons or Ghatak Commandos act as shock troops and spearhead assaults ahead of battalion. Only the most physically strong and motivated soldiers are selected to be a part of the platoon. Reason being that they have to go through a rigorous training process of rock climbing, navigation, close quarter battles and heliborne assaults.
The Platoon is usually of 20 zealous men, consisting of a Captain, non-commission officers, marksman and spotter pairs, light machine gunners and radio operators.
In summary, they are given tasks like raiding on the enemy’s artillery positions, supply dumps, airfields, to name a few. “Ghatak” in literally terms means “killer” or “lethal”.
2. Garud Commando Force
Garud Commando Force are relatively a new division of the Indian Air Force. Formed in 2004, this divisions masters in jungle and snow survival techniques, anti-hijack and counter insurgency training, specialized weapon handling and advanced driving skills.
There are about 2000 Garud Commando personnel who ae responsible for the protection of critical Air Force bases, installations, search and rescue operations during peace and hostilities.
They are recruited through airmen selection centres via advertisements. Once selected, the trainees undergo an extensive 72 weeks of training. This is the longest training period among all the Indian Special Forces.
3. Marcos
Indian Navy MARCOS or Navy’s Marine Commandos are one of the best known forces in the world. This was formed around 1980s MARCOS and are one of the only few forces who can be para dropped into the sea with full combat load.
These brave soldiers have to go through one of the toughest courses for about 2.5 years. The training is supposedly so challenging that almost 85% of the applicants get rejected in the pre-training selection procedure. The lucky ones who get selected begin with a 5 week training infamously known as the “Hell’s week”. Their advanced training includes anti-hijacking, anti-piracy, clandestine, operations, amphibious operations, hostage rescue, unconventional warfare, to name a few.
4. Para Commando Forces
These robust special forces were formed in the 20th century. For the kind of lethal operations they perform, all in all Para Commando Forces are demanded to be operationally efficient, physically fit, mentally sharp, highly energetic & motivated to be a part of the troop.
Apart from daily 20kms runs with 60km baggage and man-to-man assault practices, Para commandos have to free fall from heights of as high as 34,000 feet. By the same token, these special forces are trained in all terrains including deep sea making their training regime one of the most cumbersome process.
5. Force One
Force One is an elite and sophisticated commando force in charge of guarding Mumbai. Notably, it is a specialised counter terrorism unit. This army unit is prepared to get into action as quickly as in 15 minutes. After all, they are the world’s fastest response teams! This force is the youngest Indian special force. Less than 10% of the applicants are selected to be a part of the same.
6. National Security Guard or Black Cats
NSG was formed to protect states from internal disturbances, in 1984. In essence, this force is a mix of the Indian Army and Central Armed Police Forces. NSG comprises of two units – the Special Action Group (SAG) & Special Ranger Groups (SRG).
This division is responsible to retaliate during terrorists attacks. For the black dress and black cat insignia worn on their uniform they are also known as the Black Cats.

Black Cats are dexterous in handling counter terrorist tasks including hijacking tasks on land, sea and air; search, detection and neutralization of bombs and post blast investigations. As a matter of fact, they have three 14-month training, and a basic training period of 90 days. Their training and selection process is so difficult that the dropout rates range from 70-80 percent. Endurance tests for this force is meant to gauge the trainee’s performance under stress and exhaustion. Notably, this is one of the few forces in the world that is able to use almost all complex weapons.
7. COBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action)
COBRA are the only special forces which are trained in guerrilla warfare to fight against Naxalite groups in the country. Additionally, they are known to be one of the most efficient law enforcing units of India. As a matter of fact, in total there are 10 established COBRAS and all are well trained in jungle warfare, explosive tracking, physical endurance, map reading and GPS based operations and execution.
The art of camouflage is an essential part of training for the COBRA. On the whole, the training regime is refreshed at regular intervals and usually, a period of 3 months is given to the trainees to sharpen their skills.
8. Special Frontier Force
The main goal of SFF was originally to conduct covert operations behind Chinese lines in the event of another Sino-Indian War. This division was established on 14th November 1962 to specialize in hostage rescue, direct action, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare and covert operations.
Like the Indian army, they too undergo a 9 month training program before they can be deployed to various posts. These forces are skilled in Guerrilla tactics, parachute jumps & mountain and jungle warfare.
