Hello to all the new kitchen lovers who are still finding their feet into the complex world of cooking! Do not fear for thou shall not go hungry. Just follow these easy to make recipes which require minimum effort and maximum satisfaction, and soon you will feel like a culinary genius! The best part about these recipes is that you can make them at any time of the day, be it 3am or 3pm!
1. Mashed Potatoes – blessing for all the new kitchen lovers!
Who does not love potatoes? And potatoes in any form are definitely welcome, especially when they have been mashed to perfection and mixed with liberal amounts of butter, cream and cheese.
So here’s what you need for your potato perfection:
- 3 Potatoes (well, that one is a little obvious, no?)
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 50 gms butter
- Cheese! (lots and lots of cheese)
Boil the potatoes in water till they are soft. Once boiled, remove from the water and allow them to cool. Peel the potatoes and place them in a large bowl. In order to get them to a smooth consistency, a potato ricer would be ideal. But the same can be achieved with a potato masher. Try and get the potatoes to the smoothest consistency you can achieve.
In a pan, add the cream, butter and cheese and stir on a low heat till they are mixed well. Add this mixture into the mashed potatoes and combine it so that you get a homogeneous mixture.
Eat it straight away!
2. Bacon and Egg Sandwich
Before you start drooling over your keyboard, you need to know that this sandwich is so versatile because it can be eaten at 3 AM or at 3 PM and it still manages to leave you with the happiest food baby of all time.
You need:
- An egg
- Bacon (as much as you like)
- 2 slices of thick cut bread
- Butter or mayonnaise
- Cheese (lots of it)
- Oil to fry
First, add some oil in a pan and fry the bacon strips till they are brown, but not burnt and they are cooked through. Remove the bacon and keep aside. Drain some of the oil out of the pan and fry the egg in the remaining lovely bacon oil. The egg needs to be a sunny-side up, so make sure the yolk does not break open.
Once the egg is cooked, remove from the pan and drain out any excess oil. Take the two slices of bread and brush with butter on both sides. Place the buttered bread into the pan and allow one side to get golden. Flip the bread to allow the other side to crisp up. Apply the mayonnaise and the bacon and top with the fried egg on the already golden slice of bread. Add your choice of cheese and place the other slice of bread on top.
Remove from the pan and devour! This is a messy sandwich as the yolk bursts open and drenches the entire sandwich in yolky goodness.
3. Mac & Cheese
Variations of the recipe can be created by adding chopped bacon or by the use of different kinds of cheese! But since you all are new kitchen lovers, we will keep it simple.
So Mac & Cheese is for sure the most comforting thing you can eat after a long day. It always leaves you with a warm, happy glow- like a food hug!
This recipe serves one person so the measurements are accordingly crated. If you want to make this for more people, the general rule is 100 gms of pasta per person. The other ingredients can be adjusted according to the required portion.
You need:
- 100 gms of macaroni shells
- 1 cup grated cheese of your choice
- A cup milk
- 1 tsp salt and pepper
Boil the macaroni in water till it is cooked but not too soft. Drain and set aside.
In a pan, add the milk and cheese and cook it on a low heat till the cheese has melted and amalgamated with the milk. Add the macaroni to this cheese sauce and season with salt and pepper.
4. Pancakes
Or should I call them ‘happy cakes’, because the only feeling they leave you with is pure, doughy delirium.
- 2 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons castor sugar
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 3 cups of milk
- 4 tablespoons of butter, melted
Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in a bowl. In a separate bowl, add the whisked eggs, melted butter and milk. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and mix well till you get a homogenous mix.
In a pan, add 2 tablespoons of oil and 2 tablespoons of butter and allow to heat. Take a ladleful of the pancake mixture and add into the pan. Allow the pancake to cook completely on one side before you flip it over. An indication of this would be the formation of small bubbles along the edges of the pancake. Flip over the pancake and allow it to cook on the reverse side. Once cooked, remove and repeat till all the batter is consumed.
Serve with whipped cream and lots of fresh fruit or Nutella!
For the adventurous few, variations of the pancake recipe can be incorporated by adding chocolate chips, Nutella or berries like blueberries and chopped strawberries.
