10. Between the Spider and the Lamp (1956)
The piece, which Hussain refers to as his Guernica, depicts five women, who appear to hail from different racial backgrounds, engaged in conversation as one of them strikes down a spider.
11. Cyclonic Silence (1977)
The oil on canvas painting is a tribute to the cyclone that hit Andhra Pradesh in 1977, which killed over 10,000 people.
12. Hanuman: The original Superman
Husain here juxtaposes the beloved monkey-god from the Ramayana with Superman. Hanuman wears the familiar red briefs, while he is seen ripping apart his chest to reveal Ram and Sita.
13. Mahabharata (1990)
One of his many pieces on the Hindu epic, this piece is a 16-foot-long mural which tries to encapsulate the drama and destruction of the battle.
14. Apu and the train
The piece recreates the iconic scene from Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali, where the protagonist Apu, and his sister Durga watch spellbound the first time they see a railway.
15. Sprinkling Horses
Husain’s body of work is sprinkled with his inclination towards drawing the equine form, and is horses. Sprinkling horses sold for $1.14 million in 2011.
