6. Banaras Ghat
Husain’s obsession with the holy city of Varanasi manifested itself in many of his works. This vertical canvas, seeks to capture the spirit of the ancient city.
7. The Sixth Seal (1964)
One of the last few paintings to be sold while Husain was alive, this cubist piece was sold for a little over Rs3.5 crore in May 2011.
8. Mother Teresa
Husain painted over 18 canvases on Mother Teresa, from 1980 onwards. He was influenced by her life and legacy. He is often depicted as faceless, with Hussain choosing to play up on the maternal aspect of the Christian saint, including a painting inspired by Michelangelo’s La Pieta.
9. Battle of Ganga and Jamuna (1971)
This oil on canvas, which is part of his Mahabharata series, sold for a record $1.6 million in 2008 at Christies’ in New York in 2008.. The canvas is split into two, with the Jamuna on the right and the Ganga on the left.
