6. Purple Skies
This movie is a brave and commendable attempt by Sridhar Rangayan to bring forth the stories of various homosexual, bisexual and transgender individuals. He weaves their stories together to make this an extremely touching and powerful movie.
7. Prostitutes of God
Even though this tradition was banned over 20 years ago, girls at the age of 10 are still sold to temples as sex slaves to the Goddess Yellama. They are called Devadasis. This movie explores their lives and conditions.
8. The World Before Her
Directed by Nisha Pahuja, this is a powerful story about two extreme camps where girls are trying to fit in: One is the intense Miss India pageant camp which is glamourous, yet very strenuous and the other is a Hindu national camp which recruits young girls. This throws new light on the position of women in the Indian society today.
9. In Their Shoes
This movie speaks about the shoe industry in Agra and how the India-Pakistan divide and shifts in trade (globalisation) has affected the industry. It also shows the lives of the shoemakers in detail and closely watches the traditional way of shoe making. It is directed by Atul Sabharwal (of Aurangzeb fame).
10. I Can Love Too
This movie speaks about specially abled people who have difficulty in coping with daily lives unlike normal people and yet, are neglected or subjected to lack of opportunities. In this documentary directed by M. Bhowmick, they express their need for love and desire and how difficult it is for them to find a partner.
