For a Potterhead like me, there were enough and more deaths in the series to make me cry, squirm and then smile again when Harry destroys Voldemort. But here is a list of 10 absolutely sad and heart wrenching moments from Harry Potter which I’m sure made your shed a tear or two as well.
1. Harry’s family in the Mirror of Erised
In the first book, while looking for Nicholas Flames, Harry comes across the mirror of Erised. In the mirror, he sees his parents who had died when he was merely a baby. Also, to heighten the scene in the movie, Harry Potter tries to hold his mother’s hand but finds nothing to hold in reality. This moment made us all cringe for the small, brave orphan.
2. Hedwig’s death
According to JK Rowling, Hedwig’s death in the final book was necessary as it was meant to signify end of innocence. But for Harry Potter, Hedwig was more than just a pet. She was a friend and stayed by his side even when Ron and Hermione refused to believe him in the fourth book. Her death hit the owner and readers equally badly.
3. When Harry Potter finds out the truth about Sirius
In the third book, Harry Potter overhears a conversation in Hogsmeade about Black (James’ best friend) betraying him. But upon meeting Sirius in some very different circumstances, he realises that Sirius hadn’t betrayed his parents and he was locked up in Azkaban, the horrible wizard prison, for 12 years even though he was innocent. He also learnt that Sirius was his Godfather and that gave him new hope.
4. Sirius’ death

After a short lied bliss with his godfather, Sirius, Harry Potter had to bid goodbye to him in the fifth book. Harry and his friends were in trouble with Voldemort’s supporters and Dumbledore’s army including Sirius had come to save them. Sirius was fighting valiantly until a killing curse from Bellatrix hit him and all Harry’s dreams about spending time with Sirius were shattered.
5. Article on Hagrid

Hagrid was the sweetest man in the whole series, but we never cared to fathom the depth of his character. His wand was broken because Riddle had accused him falsely and he was forbidden from doing magic. His identity of a half-giant was revealed in an article by Rita Skeeter and people mistrusted him thereafter as they thought he was rogue and brutish.
